I had not seen that WiFi code since it was not in the PIO examples but it clearly demonstrates that I had not missed anything.
That made me look elsewhere and I discovered that my paralle.pio.h file was not being updated whenever I changed my parallel.pio file![:shock:]( "Shocked")
So, a quick edit to the Makefile put that right but how the parallel.pio.h file came into existence is a mystery ...
Taking out some unwanted changes to parallel.pio and a recompile now has it working so next, build the hardware and fine tune ...
