Hi,This paragraph makes it sound like you were not able to write the image (it sounds like you are asking for help in doing so). But, yet, the fact that you were able to find other things that don't work, implies that you *were* able to write the image.I'm sure there used to be instructions on the main website (or linked form it) on how to write a distribution .img.xz directly to SD using tar and dd, but there's no trace now: only rpi-imager instructions.
I can help with how to write the image, but I don't want to presume anything, since it sounds like you have already scaled that hurdle.
Yes thanks, I did manage that part (that is meant by the following part of the paragraph but perhaps poorly worded, sorry). I knew it was basically just a case of piping the right extraction command into dd, I just couldn't remember the preferred/optimal syntax. I found a blog post by googling that gave an example.
My thrust was more about having to go hunting down random, sometimes outdated, blogs to suss out these things when I felt it should be (and was sure it used to be) well signposted at an in-house location. That way I'd have some confidence that the "cheatcodes" even still worked (which as it turned out one of them didn't). The SD-write command is a slightly different matter as it's not OS config-related, but it's also needed if you want to do a headless install.
