General discussion • Re: how much would it have cost per pi500 to fit the M.2 components?

You would pick the one for two bucks less, just because it's 2 bucks cheaper and not care at all that for $2 more you could, if you had/wanted to, upgrade to an nvme you could instead of having to buy a whole new Pi?

For that small price difference it makes no sense to save the $2, except maybe if you simply did not have the $2 right now, and even then you could probably get buy until your next paycheck.

For the businesses buying large quantities of boards, the $2/board savings makes sense. For a one off, it does not.

Not really. You're assuming everyone has the same, or greater budget, for tech that you do. Not everyone does. $2 is likely a trivial expense for many in a developed/western country but outside of that demographic it may be far from trivial.

Oh, and it won't just be $2. It'll almost certainly be $2 plus import duties and taxes.
Again, trivial amount if you're buying 1 board.

But if you really must save the $2 plus vat/taxes, it's still a choice.

I still believe most of us tech savvy tinkerers around here would think: "for $2 more I can make this upgradable and not have to buy another Pi". And everyone will agree that vat/taxes on $90 is much higher than the $2 if you have to buy another Pi if you ever decided you wanted an nvme in there.

For a kid saving his paper route money for a Pi, sure, I can see the $2 cheaper being a compelling choice. For an adult tinkerer like most of us in this discussion, saving less then $3 ($2 + whatever vat on top of it) is beyond comprehension to me.

Now, if you're OK with a drive and cable sticking out of the back of the Pi, all of this does not matter. I dislike all the spaghetti that goes along with it and the extra $2 + vat to avoid it is more than worth it. So given the choice I'll pay the extra, every time as it does not make sense otherwise.
