Is it the USB-C connector cable you are talking about?I tried connecting these to the buck converter, but it wouldn't power the Pi, even when I swapped the wires around the other way, it still wouldn't work.
There are USB-C power regulators/buckconvertors with a female USB-C output and + and - input connections for your 12V battery. They implement USB-PD, very nice and compact. Just put a standard male-male USB-C cable between that model and the Pi. Note that I haven't seen any that can output 5V with 5A, but they do the standard 3A, but a Pi5 will work if nothing is connected on USB.
But usually people doing custom powering use the GPIO pins to power the Pi, at least I do for several Pis. Make sure you got the right pin numbers.
