I would ask why you're trying to drive the HVS directly when you can achieve the same things described in that article through the DRM/KMS API? Hacking directly risks getting trampled by the vc4 DRM driver if it chooses to update anything.
I'm experimenting with using the Pi for scaling and rotating video signals, starting with an HDMI in (via the camera interface) and maybe analogue signals if I can work out what's needed (I see you replied to my other post about that, thank you).

I'd like to learn more by accessing the hardware directly and getting a feel for how everything fits together but it may well be that it's not the right approach for a finished design. That said, I've written some scripts to create a minimalist Gentoo SD image with a real time kernel and it's easy enough not to include the DRM driver if it turns out to be a viable approach.

Right now I'm also experimenting with libdrm and Python's cv2 package just to see what's what.
