Seperate boot media or all OS on a single drive?

Which model Pi?

For separate media, shutdown (for models prior to Pi5 use the gpio_shutdown overlay), swap media, boot. About as simple as it gets.

Next step up, asuming one OS on USB, on on SD, and a 4B or later is a conditional filter in the EEPROM config that changes boot order based on a GPIO state.

A more complex way of achieving a simlar result (I use it but threre are now easier ways) is a combined boot partition that makes use of a GPIO based filter and the os_prefix paramter in config.txt. Needs some OS tweaks to make things work correctly so that kernel updates go the the right place. Should also work with multiple OS on the same drive. I've not tested this with Bookworm or on any OS that uses non-standard firmware.
