It turns out `/sys/kernel/debug/dri/1` is full of useful information, especially the `hvs_regs` and `state` files.
I still haven't quite got my head around how/why the RPi5 splits the video hardware across multiple `dri` cards/devices but the contents of the three directories under `/sys/kernel/debug/dri` are actually a really good way of identifying the correct card, since only one has these (primarily 2D-related?) files.
